Our second blog from our UK visit last week is on the wonderful restaurant ‘The Paper Mill’, located on the River Esk in the tranquil conservation village of Lasswade. This restaurant is breathing new life into a beautiful former mill, 20 minutes out of Edinburgh city. We stumbled upon this little gem on a road trip and it looked so charming we just had to check it out.
A little history: The Esk Valley was once home to some ten mills, renowned for the production of fine papers made from Esparto grass, originally imported from Africa. The era of papermaking ended with the closure of the last mill on the Esk, which ceased production in 2004. Embracing the original building’s heritage, The Paper Mill has been lovingly transformed into a welcoming place and beautiful restaurant.
It is now a new all-day bar and restaurant with a warm welcome(also a local favourite which we LOVE). Locals and visitors alike pop in throughout the day to enjoy a fresh coffee and some home baked cakes, Sunday brunch with the papers, or an evening meal and glass of wine on the terrace. We had a lovely dinner at the restaurant and the food proved to be inventive, exciting and of course delicious.
As soon as we arrived in the door, we were greeted by the friendly, welcoming staff who straight away made you feel right at home. The place was buzzing with people chatting, laugh and enjoying their meals. We found it was a restaurant with a hint of romance, the decor and atmosphere was the perfect surroundings for a perfect ‘date night’, while also being a perfect spot for a dinner party with friends or family.
The combination of their amazing food, along with their buzzing, romantic atmosphere and setting makes this spot one well worth a visit. Our meal was gorgeous and we would highly recommend it to anyone.
This is a spot that is dressed to impress and it certainly does that, while also giving you delicious, tasty dishes.
