I remember laughing to myself when someone first explained to me that “Glamping” meant Glamorous camping…. How could camping possibly be glamorous I thought to myself… Ever since, I have had the desire to investigate what exactly is involved! I recently set out to experience life as a ‘glamper’, and escaped to Cape Clear island to stay at Chleire Haven campsite.
Nestled away in South West Cork, Cape Clear island, (Oileán Chléire) is the southernmost inhabited part of Ireland, it has a population of just over 100 people, and it is an official Gaeltacht area! Once we had arrived I knew we were going to have a truly memorable weekend, the bustle of Cork city seemed a million miles away. Sally & Dave who run the campsite met off us the boat with a big smile and a van to take our bags to the campsite. After a quick rest at the islands only shop, and a very descriptive run down from a local man about the islands nightlife, we began our hike up to the campsite, full of spirits planning what we were going to spend the afternoon doing!
Chleire Haven campsite, which overlooks the glittering bay… is truly spectacular! Upon arrival, Sally & Dave gave us a tour of the facilities, and made us feel right at home. There were beautiful bathrooms, showers, a utensils area that had plenty sauce pans, pans, cups, bowls, and everything else you could possibly imagine needing for an evening meal! Whether you choose to stay in a yurt or a tipi… you will feel as though you want to stay forever!
The yurts were particularly gorgeous! A pretty blue wooden painted door opened into a large spacious area with comfy beds/ blankets, a cooker, shelves stocked with snacks, and a clear ceiling to watch the stars! With plenty space between you and your neighbour, and a lovely seating area overlooking the bay… you will feel as though you’re living in a film set!
As soon as we’d unpacked our bags and put on our runners, we set off on an adventure across the island. We had no idea of where we were going, which was all part of the fun! We nibbled on sour blackberries in the bushes, took in the rays of sunshine, and stopped to admire the views more times than I could remember! It almost felt as though there was no one else on the island, it was so serene, scenic and in the middle of the sea. I fell completely in love with cape clear, and the glamping experience.
When we arrived back to camp cross-country style (having lost our bearings along the way), we made some delicious Clonakilty sausage sandwiches on the BBQ, and watched the sun set, before heading out to socialize with the locals. We had a super night out, (I even spotted my first shooting star!) a comfortable cosy sleep, and I’m already planning my return trip to Chleire Haven!
If you’re looking for a gem of a getaway, an escape into a tranquil romantic world…. I highly recommend a trip to Cape Clear, and Chleire Haven campsite!
Tips:
- There is an abundance of activities to do on the island, including Kayaking, snorkelling, and hill walking all of which can be arranged through Sally at Chleire Haven.
- Depending on which type of accommodation (Yurt or tipi) and package you choose, Sally will provide linen, towels, cooking facilities and even hot chocolate!
- There is a ferry service operating between Baltimore and Cape Clear, which leaves at 2pm and 5.30pm most days (depending on the season).
- There is a small shop on the island to cater for anything you forget to bring with you, however there is no ATM machine on the island, so make sure to have cash with you!
- Don’t forget to bring your camera to capture some beautiful shots!
