We spent a week in Lanzarote recently. The idea was to switch off and not to be blogging but that is easier said then done! After a day by the pool, I was eager to get the camera back out so in this blog and video, I am taking you on a road trip in Lanzarote! Have a look at our vlog here.
How we got there and where we stayed: We flew from Cork Airport with Ryanair and the flight took about 4 hours to Lanzarote. We stayed in the beautiful Suite Hotel Fariones Playa in Puerto Del Carmen. It was the perfect hotel suited in between the old town and the new town of Puerto Del Carmen. The pool area was spectacular and right in front of the pool was the beach. It was a little piece of heaven. What I loved about this hotel was its was only 10kms form the airport and surrounded by picturesque beaches, restaurants, shopping areas, fishing harbour and my favourite part… the old style town.
We rented a car at our hotel and headed off to explore the island. The Fire Mountains at the Timanfaya Natonal Park was our first stop. The Fire Mountains were created between 1730 and 1736 when more than 100 volcanoes, rose up and devastated this part of the island. The last eruptions were in 1824 but due to the low rainfall this area appears much the same as it did just after the eruptions.While it is not possible to just wander freely around the Volcanoes, a Coach Trip around the National Park is included in the entry fee of €8. The tours are open from 10am – 6pm
We then stopped off in the old capital of Lanzarote called Teguise which is in the centre of the island and 220m above sea level. We did a little shopping in the unique shops, had a bit of lunch and explored the streets with their palaces, and squares which stand witness to the passing of the centuries. We stumbled across the Castillo de Santa Barbara Castle which sits high up on Mount Guanapay overlooking Teguise, A great place to go for views all around and it costs is just €3 for entry.
We then headed further north up the island and came across Mirador del Rio. This is Lanzarote’s most famous viewpoint, located 497 metres above sea level and offering panoramic views of the North Coast. It costs €4.50 for a adult ticket.
We drove back down South and went for a relaxing swim in Tías Beach in Puerto Del Carmen before heading for dinner in the Old Town of Puerto Del Carme. We enjoyed a traditional Spanish dish while watching the sun set after a great day.
