On The QT

Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia

Blogger: Lauren Lucy Crowley

We decided that Kuala Lumpar (KL) the capital of Malaysia couldn’t be left out of our trip. Having stopped there before on a lay over, I had never actually left the airport and so was excited to see what lay beyond the arrivals hall!

We stayed in a beautiful boutique hotel in very close proximity to the airport (as we were leaving early the following day) called the YouniQ Hotel. I fell in love with the décor at first sight! It was colourful, trendy, and excellent value! Highly recommend staying there on any future visits to KL you may have!

The hotel arranged a pick up for us who brought us into the city itself (approx. 55 minute drive) so that we could explore the sights! Our first stop was the bustling central market where we had lunch, and Chinatown (which had some excellent shopping!).

We then headed off to the Batu caves, which is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside India, and is dedicated to Lord Murugan (the world tallest statue of Murugan standing at 140ft is just outside the caves!). Rising almost 100 m above the ground, the Batu Caves temple complex consists of three main caves and a few smaller ones. The biggest, referred to as Cathedral Cave or Temple Cave, has a very high ceiling and features ornate Hindu shrines. To reach it, visitors must climb a steep flight of 272 steps!

Although almost 26 degrees celsius, we took on the challenge of climbing the steps, (OntheQT tip: be sure to wear appropriate clothing or you will be asked to rent scarves/skirts at a small fee!). Although we almost passed out with the heat on the way up, we had some monkey friends to distract us… and it was fascinating to watch the rituals being held in the caves at the top!

As the sun began to set we headed for the famous Petronas twin towers which tower over the city at 1500ft and were once the tallest buildings in the world, before heading back to our hotel and got ready for our next flight in the morning! It’s always fun to see as much as you can of a city in a day… which is exactly what we did!
