Guest Blog with Shonagh Lyons “Inishbofin – My idea of Bliss”

Shonagh studied Speech and Drama in college and began her career in media in 2007 when she landed the job of presenter on RTE’s ‘Sattitude’. Since then she has worked as a Presenter and Researcher on various programmes for RTE. She has spent the last few years working in production and in 2011 was a Producer on the TV3 programme ‘S.O.S. – Save Our Shops’.  Most recently Shonagh was seen as host of kids gameshow ‘Watch Your Language’.

Off the west coast of Connemara is a little island, which captured my heart before I even knew it. You see for years my parents had taken me there. I was one on my first visit and have a collection of childhood memories about the beautiful island and they were carried on well into my teens. I can’t remember a holiday there that I didn’t love. Last year as a thirty year old I returned and I was nervous. Would it be as good as I remembered? Had I built it up too much? But it was on that visit I discovered just how amazing it is. I brought Tom, my other half and so Inishbofin has gained another fan.

If you are looking for a place that gives you the opportunity to unwind, to switch off and to forget your worries then this is it. The moment you step on the boat from Cleggan to the island itself you get a sense of just how stunning this place is. From walks or bike rides around the island to lazy days spent on the beach it’s all about enjoying the down time. The saying ‘plenty of time on the island’ is used on regular occasions! If you are a keen bird watcher or diver then you won’t be disappointed. If you like a good old fashioned sing song then make sure you arrive with a party piece just in case! You can also indulge in some massage therapy with a local lady who does relaxation and beauty treatments. Or like me you can simply spend the day sipping tea, eating chocolate and watching the world go by! Isn’t this what holidays are all about??

There are three hotels on the island, a couple of B&B’s and some self-catering accommodation. I have chosen Inishbofin because it’s different, it has character and the people are full of energy and personality.

It’s more than a holiday; it’s an experience. Try it and see!
