Here at OntheQT we love nothing more than discovering hidden gems off the beaten track… however, we also appreciate going to one of the worlds most iconic concert venues for an unforgettable evening of culture! Recently the #OntheQTontour crew took a trip to the world renowned Sydney Opera House, a truly splendid evening!
The infamous Sydney Opera House, (now a UNESCO world heritage site) has been identified as one of the 20th century’s most distinctive buildings. It is admired internationally and proudly treasured by the people of Australia (rightly so!). Though its name suggests a single venue, the building comprises multiple performance venues which together are among the busiest of performing arts centres in the world – hosting well over 1,500 performances annually, attended by more than 1.2 million people!
The building and its surroundings occupy the whole of Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, which is between Sydney Cove and Farm Cove – very accessible by public transport! Close by is the famed Sydney Harbour Bridge, making it the ultimate kodak moment evening!
From the moment we hopped out of our taxi, I knew it was going to be a night I would remember forever. As the sun was setting on Sydney harbour bridge behind us, people laughed over the glasses of wine at the beautiful Opera Bar, crowds rushed into the Opera house in their finest attire, and we posed for some photos to capture the moment forever!
We were lucky enough to attend a showing of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” , a childhood favourite of mine! Having collected the tickets, and walked up the red velvet carpets to our seats, we sat there in anticipation waiting for the show to start! The costumes, the lights, the music were simply amazing… I was captivated as I watched on in awe for the entire show! Almost disappointed when it got to the interval we took a wander to explore the intricate design and the beautiful architecture of the building. The second half exceeded all my expectations making our night at the Opera one of the best nights I’ve had in a long time!
If you’re in Sydney and looking for something extra special to do… I couldn’t recommend a trip to the Opera House more! With a range of different shows throughout the calendar year there really is something for everyone of all ages! (OntheQT tip: The cheapest tickets on sale are for matinee shows during the week!)
