Sand Hotel, Reykjavík

During a recent trip to Iceland, we stayed in the centre of Reykjavík in the Sandhotel. The Sandhotel is a new boutique hotel in the heart of Reykjavík, on the high-street, Laugavegur. It is extremely central and allows you to walk down the street and be in the heart of Reykjavík to enjoy  the vibrant cultural life of Reykjavík. Everything in the city itself is within walking distance of this hotel – restaurants, museums, shops etc.

Birna showed us around the hotel itself and filled us in on the history of the hotel and surrounding area. She also told us that the gentlemen’s store of  Guðsteinn Eyjólfsson was one of the oldest stores in Reykjavik. The staff in the hotel wear a very smart uniform from this store. You can check out our full video with Birna and a tour of the hotel on our vlog here.

The rooms are all unique and different and Birna even told us that the unique cushions in the rooms were made in the Gentlemen’s store. Each room has a Art deco with respect for the history of its surroundings while still mixed with modern design and contemporary art. What I loved about our tour of the hotel was that each room is different and finished to perfection. After a busy day of adventures, falling into their soft bed was just want was needed. You will get the most comfortable nights sleep after a luxurious shower. This hotel is like a little piece of heaven.

The Sandholt bakery is located on the grounds of the hotel and is known as one of the best bakeries in Iceland so we just had to experience it for ourselves. It exceeded our expectations! The bakery first opened in 1920 and is still run by the same family. You know it is a great spot when you see the locals popping in for breads, cakes and coffees throughout the day. It was our local spot each morning. We started the day with a hot coffee and pastry before a day of adventures. We would highly recommend this bakery.

We couldn’t recommend The Sandhotel highly enough. It honestly was one of the nicest hotels we ever stayed at during our travels around the world. For more information or to book your stay, you can check out their website here.
